USAopoly Games {TOS Review}

 USAopoly Review

During the course of the year we get to review some really fun school curriculum. However, no and again the kids are thrilled and surprised when I tell them we are reviewing a game. They love reviewing and trying new things, but when it's a fun game everyone wants in as soon as the box arrives. For the last month we have been playing two really fun games from USAopoly. The games we were sent to review were Wonky - The Crazy Cubes Card Game and Tapple - Fast Word Fun For The Whole Family.

These games are perfect for family game night, or anytime really. As soon as they arrived the kids were desperate to play. I knew that there would be no hope of going back to our regular school routine until we have played a few rounds of each game.

I will talk about them in the order that we played them, basically because it was the order my kids grabbed them out of the box.

Wonky was the first game we played.

USAopoly Review

The box says it's a game for players aged 8+ however, Captain (6) had no problem with it. It's a really easy to learn game but seriously fun. We played this first and had quite a few goes.

Contents:

9 Wonky Blocks
54 cards
Storage bag
Rules

How to Play:

The object of the game is to be the first player to play all your cards as you add blocks to the tower!

Every player gets 7 cards at the beginning of the game. The tallest player goes first, on your go you choose a card from your hand to play, if you play a block stacking card, have to add a matching block to the top of the tower. If you don't have a card you can play you keep drawing a card till you can play. There are action cards these mean you can pass or reverse play. There are also combo cards. These cards allow you to add a block to the tower and make the next player draw a card or reverse play. Even the box this box comes in is wonky.

I have realized we are quite competitive and so play can be quite noisy.

Tapple is a great game too. However it can get VERY noisy.

 USAopoly Review

Contents:
1 Touch Activated Press & Play Letter Eliminator (Tapple Wheel)
36 Category Cards with 144 Categories

How To Play:

The player with the middle initial closet to 'A' goes first. (Quite a problem in my house since both my boys have the middle initial A).
Take a category card from the stack and choose one for the round. (There is a set of easier categories for younger players). To start a round you say what the category is and then tap (not hit - I have to remind my children) the timer button in the center of the 'Tapple' wheel. Each player has 10 seconds to name an answer for the category starting from an available letter on the wheel. As each letter is used it gets harder and harder. You can only use each letter once during the round. You go out on the round for various reasons;

  • Fail to say a word and hit a letter before the buzzer sounds
  • Name an answer that doesn't match the category
  • Press a letter for an unacceptable answer.
When someone goes out the next player TAPS the timer to continue the round. There are extra rules for overtime and winning. It's a really fun game.

So after we played each game for a couple of times we were able to get back to schoolwork. Until Dad came home then nothing could be done (not even dinner) until he promised to play right after. So that it was we did. We have played these games many times this last month. I love both games and there are also some little features I really like.

Wonky has a really cute bag for the blocks. It keeps them together well. As for the Tapple game this is an excellent game for travel or taking to a friends house as the cards store inside the Tapple wheel itself and so there are no loose pieces to loose.

I have really enjoyed spending time with my family playing these games. Which in turn made me spend some time one their website. I have chosen a few other games to add to our collection for Christmas.

Random Five - a few days late

1. We spent Friday at the lake, and I actually camped out in our tent. It was the first time in 10 years. I was pretty dosed up on allergy meds and my favorite essential oil allergy blend Spark Naturals LLP.

2. We had a really cool real life science experience. We had been studying about how insects shed their hard exoskeletons. When we were camping we saw lots of the left over skeletons all over the tree trunks. Captain thought it was really cool to see the evidence of the science we had just discussed that very day.

3. The kids had a great time with their friends jumping into the lake. There was no swim beach but some low rocks that went into the lake where it was very deep and safe to jump. Jam and his friend checked out the area to make sure, and we made sure no one dived etc... The water was colder that it was at the peak of the season but still warm enough to swim. It was probably the last time for the year.

4. The camping adventure was organized by our Church ward. They organized the food for dinner and breakfast. We had a great time with lots of friends. It was fun sitting around the campfire with old and new friends. Some brought their instruments and played while others sang. Kids played games and roasted marshmallows. Such a fun time.

5. We are starting to gear up for our first swim meet of the winter USA swim season. I can't wait to get back in the swing!

YWAM Publishing - Heroes of History {TOS REVIEW}

YWAM Publishing Review
Boo loves to read and we were offered a choice history book from YWAM Publishing. It was SO hard to choose. I was going to choose, but found it so difficult I let Boo choose. After doing a little research she decided on one of their Heroes of History selection. Then we finally narrowed it down to Clara Barton - Heroes Under Fire. It was a tough decision - there are SO many amazing people to learn about and I love this collection. If I could afford it I would buy them all.

YWAM Publishing Review

Along with the book we also received a Unit Study Curriculum Guide ours came as a CD but I think they normally come as a downloadable file.

Clara Barton had quite a remarkable life. Boo really enjoyed telling me about her and life. She talked and talked one afternoon about her sister 'Dolly'. She was very moved by all that she went through. My daughter found how the incidents of her early life molded her into the person she became and why she was known by many as 'The Angel of the Battlefield'. My daughter was quite amazed that someone as young as ten would be the 'nurse' in charge of her brother. This led to a great discussion of the old practice of 'bleeding' a patient to help with to 'vigorous' blood.

Clara Barton was a volunteer nurse during the Civil War and then later went to Europe. One of the most famous successes of her life was the founding of  The Red Cross. This organization is still very strong today and helps many people. It's amazing that I can't remember learning about her before. Obviously my British school history completely missed her or I just didn't have such a good book to learn about all her accomplishments and help me remember what she did.

The Unit Study Curriculum Guide we were sent was very through. You could have done a complete unit study and learn a lot of extra information including geography. Since Boo is older we decided to print out the information and pick through what she wanted to do. Boo keeps a book in which she writes some of her favorite quotes. One of her favorite from Clara Barton is;

There are so many ways that we can learn from history. Boo and I both love the story style of this book. It is very easy to read, and gets you caught up in the life of Clara Barton. When you feel like this about a person from the past especially historical figures it helps you create a link in your memory so you don't forget.

The list of YWAM Publishing books containing stories of amazing people is really long. I would suggest reading all the reviews to find the next unit study you want to cover. I know Boo and I already have a few on our list. Also if you are studying a certain time frame I would suggest looking through the list for a historical figure that fits. It's a great way to learn more about history in a fun and entertaining way.

Fascinating Education - Chemistry {TOS REVIEW}

High School is a scary thing. Science and math scare me the most. I was really interested to learn about an online science curriculum called Fascinating Education. Jam was offered a year's subscription to their website to study either Fascinating BiologyFascinating Chemistry, and Fascinating Physics.

Fascinating Education Review

After researching on the website I was surprised to find that the program recommends starting their program with Fascinating Chemistry, so that's where we started.

This program has been a huge success. Jam really likes it. He has been working through the lessons and is currently working through lesson 6. He has worked through the program completely by himself since I set him up with the program and finds it really self explanatory.

Jam is used to studying online. His current math and language program are online so it's not something he finds intimidating. However chemistry wasn't the science we thought we would be covering in 9th grade so that was a little intimidating.

To say Jam likes this program would be an understatement. So far he really enjoys it and has understood what is being taught. If you want to read the overview of the course you can click here. There are 18 lessons or chapters in the course and Jam has easily been able to complete one lesson per week. There is also chemistry labs available to view on the website and they are linked to the relevant chapter. Each chapter has an end of chapter quiz, with final questions at the end of the course.

After Jam finished chapter one and completed the quiz he made the mistake of not printing his quiz. He quickly realized that the program doesn't save the results. After the student has finished the quiz and clicked 'next' after the last question it is graded automatically. When you get to this screen, there are three options, a back button, a print button, and a button to re-take the quiz.

The courses are laid out very simply with buttons underneath each picture. As you can see below under each lesson there are three buttons - Lesson, Script, and Test. When you click on the lesson button you are taken to the video lesson. Jam says it reminds him of a power-point program with a teachers voice explaining each step. He said that he likes it better than just trying to read a chemistry book, because each step is introduced as it is explained and he doesn't have to try and ignore information that is not relevant. If you click on the 'script' button you can print a copy of the lesson, Jam and I noticed that there are not as many pictures in the script as are in the lesson section. However, it does contain all the text. The 'test' button is very self-explanatory it is the test that the student completes at the end of the lesson material. (Don't forget to print the results!)

Fascinating Education Review

Jam will definitely be finishing this course. He really loves it. He says he even didn't mind going back and re-doing the test for chapter one as I wanted it printed out for our records.

The other course look really interesting too. The program suggested that you start with chemistry, then biology, and then finally physics. Members of the crew review each topic so no matter what high school science you are needing, you can find a member of the crew that review it click on the link below to read more reviews.

Random Five and Captains new Wiggle Seat video review

1. The weather has stayed nice but I think the September storms have finally started. We had a tornado threat but it didn't come any closer than 30 miles. Phew...I hate tornadoes.

2. Jam has started cycling with his Dad at the weekend. It's fun to see them go off together in their Lycra cycling gear. I will have to snap a picture one of these days. Funny thing you would think he would want his sleep as he gets up at 5:15 am every morning for Seminary. Yet up they will get at the crack of dawn on a Saturday to go out.

3. I went to my sisters last weekend and helped her with her garage sale. It was such fun. I took a car load of stuff up to sell and managed to come home with very little. In fact I had some of Captain's clothes on a table and sold the lot for $5 because we wanted to close up for lunch. I've decided it is much more fun doing a garage sale with someone else!

4. Jam is learning by the school of hard knocks as they say... the first week he went riding with his Dad he came off his bike on gravel. Rule learned - don't break hard on gravel. Last week when they went riding with my brother in law he came off again and nearly ended up in the river. Don't break in mud. Hopefully he won't come off much more. So far only a few bruises.

5. For the last few weeks Captain has been reviewing a really cool sensory seat called a Wiggle Seat he loves it. He said "It helps me wiggle on my seat" however it does keep him in his seat while we are working. It's plastic so it's easy to wipe clean and so he can use it even when eating. He was too big for his booster seat (in age and size) but this really helps him while sat at the table. Because it isn't fastened to the chair he can move it around when needed. I had to ban the older kids from sitting on it because they thought it was really cool too! Check out his video!

Free 3 Months of Math or $12 for a whole year - Plus a GIVEAWAY - 2 winners

Math is not my favorite subject to teach. My husband on the other hand finds it easy. However, he's at work all day and can't help immediately. So my favorite on-line curriculum is Math. It can be quite pricey and most of us home school families are trying to live on one income so pricey options can sometimes be too much for the budget.

Right now you can get a free three month trial or a 12 months of unlimited worksheets & tests for $12. This also includes a curriculum e-book with all the lessons in PDF format. The worksheets are all graded and tracked automatically. (I hate grading math papers). Parents/students can review each assignment after it's completed with a step-by-step solution to find their mistakes and correct them. I know I would find this a huge time-saver and at $12 it's a huge deal for home school parents on a budget.

If you want to try it for free for 3 months you don't even need to enter your credit card information - which I hate doing to access free trials.

The program creates, assigns, and grades all the assignments (worksheets and tests) and tracks the progress for you. I know this saves me a ton of time each week. The curriculum eBook includes all the lessons that you will need to teach the program in fun, colorful and engaging lessons that will make teaching math easy.

Click here if you still have any questions about how this program would work.

I am sure this great offer won't last long.

If you are still not convinced to give it a try I have a giveaway for 2 lucky winners. Each winning family will receive their choice of grade level. Enter below and GOOD LUCK!!!

ISA Professional Ceramic Flat Iron Hair Straightener {Review}

I don't know about you but I love straight hair. Boo has amazing long brown hair but when it drives naturally it has a slight wave and it doesn't have the really smooth look she likes.

I was offered an amazing ISA Professional Ceramic Flat Iron Hair Straighter to review and I was really excited.

I had only ever had a cheap $20 hair straightener that I picked up at the local sell everything store. So I was really blown away by this product.

Seriously this heats up to ultra hot in literally seconds and works amazingly.

The hair after using the straightener is smooth and glossy.

I am really amazed with this flat iron. It is fast and effective.

Believe it or not but it self regulates it's own temperature based on the thickness of your hair. There is no temperature control because it's not necessary - cool or what!

* 100% Solid Tourmaline ceramic plates
* SMART Automatic Temperature adjustment
* Universal Voltage
* Fast and safe straightening, curls, waves
* 360 degree no tangle cord
* Full 2 year warranty

There are no buttons on the handle they are inside, it rotates easily so you can use it if you are left or right handed.

I am definitely sold on this flat iron and with the 2 year warranty I am totally at ease.

16 years have gone so fast and yet taken forever...

Sixteen years ago today our blue eyed girl returned to live with her Heavenly Father. I think as I write that sentence... has it really been sixteen years. Part of me feels like it was another lifetime ago, that she is a part of me that lives deep in my heart so that I can continue to be 'normal' for her brothers and sister. Part of me feels it was just yesterday that my heart was ripped into, never to be whole until we are reunited.

I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints I know that families can be together forever. I know that through the atonement of Jesus Christ all mankind can be saved. I know these things with all my heart and yet I still mourn, I miss, I love. It is because we love that we suffer pain and loss.

The Savior suffered all things for us.

Today as always I miss her...

Random Five Friday

1. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and today I took my kids to the Temple. The older ones were able to go in and do some baptisms along with their friends. However you have to be twelve to go in and so Captain stayed with me it was amazing to walk around the grounds.

 2. We went to the zoo again. We like to go once a month and since we were in the city it was perfect.

3. The kids favorite thing to do while at the zoo is 'feed the birds' Captain asked the the lady if he could have a grape to feed them. It's more fun and lasts longer than the special liquid they squirt into the plastic tub. The bird on the right is apparently nervous and plucks his feathers out.

4. Captain got to speak to a lot of workers at the zoo today. We saw a lot of birds and he learned a lot about them.

5. We managed another week in the pool. A couple of weeks ago the weather turned cold and the water went down to 65 I was really happy that we had a little heat wave again. The pool temperature is back up to nearly 80 and we have had a couple of pool parties this week!

Gathering Threads - Litfuse Book Review

You have all heard about "Switched at Birth" stories. What if, you switched with a completely different life. Raised with comp...
