Amazing Talented Hubby - New Pool Deck Success

I am just going to take a few moments today to brag about my hubby. If you remember back a few years ago I had a hankering for a enclosed porch/sunroom. Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to our home and move an hour south, an hour I hear you scream. Well yes, just and hour to save my hubby commuting two hours a day. We missed him, and he missed us. So this works, we have more time together and we live so close to his work he even comes home for lunch most days.

So of course this move meant that we left our nice sun-room and our beautiful community summer pool behind. These were some of our favorite things. Our current town has an amazing swim team and an indoor pool which we love, but the outdoor pool is just that a pool, no zero entry and a lot of people.

So we got a pool. For the last three years we have enjoyed it and this year we wanted to step up the enjoyment so hubby has built a deck. The extra awesome park is he built it (mostly) out of wood that was given to him. Insert short story - hubby saw an ad on craigslist. A man was selling his deck if you came and got it. So hubby rounded up the big kids, bought some work gloves and off they went. The bonus part of the story was that the man was so impressed with their work ethic and refused to charge them anything. They went twice and got a lot of wood, which was perfect for the base and frame of our pool deck. We did buy new boards for the top - man wood is expensive!

The men (hubby and Jam) are out finishing off some new railing as I type but I wanted to add a few shots of their work, Boo is not in any of the photos - I did that on purpose, what teenage girl wants to be immortalized in their work scruffs :)

Sunya - The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Multiplying & Dividing {TOS REVIEW}

Math and Science {Sunya Publishing Review}

We have recently had the chance to play a game so new it's not even available yet. Sunya - The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Multiplying and Dividing. This is a very unique game that helps memorization of multiplication and division from Sunya Publishing

I played this game with Jam and Boo as it is designed for ages 9 and up. For this review we received;
  • Game book
  • Sixty playing cards
  • Multiplying and Division number line
  • 30 fact and riddle cards
The riddle cards are super fun!

Math and Science {Sunya Publishing Review}

The inventor/author has a bachelor's degree from John Carroll University and a master's degree from Barry University. He has worked in teaching.

The game itself is fun educational game. We enjoyed playing it even though it took a couple of tries before we got a hang of it.

Sunya (the "u" is pronounced as "oo" in "book") is from the Sanskrit language which is an ancient and classical Indian language. The word means empty or void which makes complete sense because the person to get rid of all their cards and call 'Sunya' wins the game.

This is definitely a game you will want to play with your kids. Captain tried to play with us but his multiplication and division skills need a little work for him to play comfortably so we solved the problem by him joining one of us on our team. That way he heard the math facts and even started to come up with a few simple ones of his own like 2 X 3 = 6.

To play you set up a number sentence framework choosing whether the game will be a division or multiplication. They then make a number sentence (not using 1,0, or wild cards). Then deals every player 4 cards each. The first player begins a turn by drawing a card. The player than looks at the number sentence and sees if they can make a new number sentence. Play continues with each player taking turns until someone runs out of cards and shouts 'Sunya'. It's a fun game and even had me checking my math facts.

Some of the crew reviewed a younger addition and subtraction version of the game. So make sure to check out the additional reviews on the link below.

Science Shepherd - Introductory Science {TOS REVIEW}

Science Shepherd Review
I have been using Introductory Science from Science Shepherd with Captain for a few weeks now. To say he loves it is an understatement. I have not reminded him about doing this subject since the day we first logged on. He had a already watch over a weeks worth of videos before the student book arrived, and then he went back and watched them again so he could complete the workbook.

Science Shepherd Review

We received a 12 month access to daily 2-5 minute videos and a copy of the level A workbook. The program is a full science course for children aged 6-11 and covers topics from the creation, science skills and tools, earth science; including meteorology, geology, oceanography, astronomy. Life Science; including underwater creatures, flying creatures, land creatures, human beings, be healthy. Physical Science; matter, energy, motion, and magnets,

Captain has really jumped head first into this course. According to the pacing guide we should be about week 4 or 5 he's on week 9. He's completed every experiment, sometimes dragging me into the kitchen kicking and screaming - OK maybe slightly exaggerated but really he made sure we got them done. He didn't allow me to brush him off till tomorrow, or next week.

The lesson material is all included in the videos. They are easy to follow, however you do have to make sure that you scroll all the way across as once we nearly missed two videos in one particular week. Captain answered all the questions correctly in the book but as I was reviewing the material, I was confused and wondered why they would ask questions in the book that wasn't covered in the video material...after looking closer I noticed a little scroll button I hadn't seen before and *boom* there they were.

When you first log in you see the following screen -

You can then click on the link you need. Since we are working on week 9 I thought I would show you what that looks like;

The first video loads and the child can just click play on the video.

This is underneath the larger screen above. You can see from my hand drawn arrow the scroll bar I nearly missed earlier.

This program is perfect for Captain. he's a very visual learner and really remembers things this way. He is definitely going to continue this course. In fact at the rate he's going we will be finished my the end of the summer.

Captain had a blast with some of the science projects. he even dressed up in a cute white coat so he could be a scientist! Here is two of our favorite experiments so far.

Week 6 Day 1 experiment from Introductory Science - Science Shepherd

Week 8 Day 1 experiment from Introductory Science - Science Shepherd

I can't recommend this science series enough. Captain has learned and remembered a lot so far and what's more is that he has enjoyed every minute of it. He may have been able to cope with the level b student book, but I am very happy I chose level a. He can read and complete every exercise by himself which gives him a huge sense of accomplishment. There is also a teacher guide which gives me all the answers and although I've looked at it, at this level it's not anything I have needed to grade his work. I asked Captain how many stars out of five would he give this and he said 5 STARS!!!!

I could go on and on about this program, but I really wouldn't be able to tell you more than what I have already said. This program is great for visual, hands on, independent style learners like Captain. It is creation based and we like that! All in all a great program. I would love to have tried the older science that was offered but I will have to just read the reviews like you - see the link below.

The crew have also been working on the higher level science programs offered Science Shepherd Biology and Science Shepherd - Life Science.

Check out the link below to read some of the reviews. As far as I've heard everyone loves this program!

Memoria Press - D'Aulaires' Greek Myths {TOS Review}

Logic, Greek Myths and Astronomy Memoria Press Review

We have been pleased to use lots of courses in the past from Memoria Press and Captain has been influenced by his older brother's love of Greek Mythology so he was really excited to be able to work on a course just for him. We received their D'Aulaire's Greek Myth set and Captain is loving it!

Logic, Greek Myths and Astronomy Memoria Press Review

To facilitate this review we received everything in the picture above. A student book, teacher guide and a copy of D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths plus a set of Greek Myth flashcards.

The course is divided into 25 lessons with a review lesson every 5 lessons making a total of 30 lessons. So it easy divides into a full year course.

I know some people don't like Greek Mythology but my older son loved and so it seems to have stuck. Boo didn't find it quite as interesting but even she loved the D'Aulaires book. Captain was excited to have his very own copy to study including a 'big boy' workbook.

The other reason I like Greek Mythology is that it is both educating and entertaining. There are references to mythology everywhere we look in out modern culture. We learn towards more of a classical education and so incorporating this course into our studies makes sense. My children already study Latin and so adding this Greek Myth course is a perfect balance.

This set is so easy to pick up and use. The teachers guide is a step by step copy of the student guide except with all the answers. Including the answers to the comprehensive questions. I love how easy these sets are to use - just keep the teacher book away from the kids.

Each lesson is broken down into different sections.

At the top of each lesson it identifies what pages from the D'Aulaires book will be covered in the lesson. I love the simplicity of this and because Captain is a great reader, I assign him these pages to be read before our next lesson.

1. Facts to Know-
This section is there to help the children identify the main characters in the pages being studied. For example in Lesson 5 one of the examples is;

Aphrodite - goddess of love and beauty
Golden Apple of Discord - caused war when thrown by Eris

Those examples are not in order and just two of the eleven given. I chose them as these facts to know can be a mixture of people or objects. The child doesn't write in this section, but it is recommended that they study it so they can understand the stories and follow the plots.

2. Vocabulary-
This section contains new vocabulary words with a place for the child to write the definition. The vocabulary word is given to the child in a sentence so as to put it in context.

3.Comprehension Questions-
This section contains questions about the pages the child has read.

4. Activities-
This section gives extra assignments. There are lists and maps at the back of the book and this is where you would find the instructions of what to do with them. Some of the assignments are verbal, but whatever the case the answers are all found in the teacher manual.

Since Captain is so young I did some of the writing in the student manual as he found all of the writing, especially the comprehension questions a little daunting. He is only seven. However, he did all the reading himself and was able to narrate all the answers. We practiced using a dictionary while we looked up the vocabulary.

Flashcards

We actually haven't used the flashcards much yet. They are not incorporated into the lessons and are really just added tools to aid memorization and study. As we work through the course I will add them into our review lessons and I am trying to think up a fun game for us to play. Although I would definitely loose as my kids know SO much more than me. I am learning along with Captain as we work through this course.

I really like this course. They couldn't have picked a better text to read a long with it. We love D'Aulaires and own many of their history spines so this was a perfect addition to our collection. They are well written and the artwork included is amazing. Since this is a children's Greek Myth book the pictures are a lot milder than some I have seen. Which again makes it a great text for children. Captain even took it to bed a time or two.

The crew were able to review three text from Memoria Press during this review period. Click on the link below to find out what they are!

Institute for Excellence in Writing - Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization {TOS Review}

Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization IEW Review

One of my favorite vendors ever is Institute For Excellence in Writing so I jumped at the chance to review Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization. I chose to work on level one with Captain and we have had a blast! We even posted his first poem on Facebook while trying out the new 'live' video feature!

Linguistic Development through Poetry Memorization IEW Review
This set is amazing and we have had a great time using it.

What we received:

Folder with 5 CD's that contained 5 levels of poetry. I was really pleased that the set comes with all 5 levels so this is a program that will grow with Captain. Plus this folder is perfect for storing the CD's in and Captain loves how special it looks.

Teacher's Manual - This contains so much information. It explains why memorization is so important. Why kids benefit from learning poetry. I found this information really interesting. I went to a speech and drama class at school where we spent a lot of time memorizing poetry. In fact I recognized a lot of the poems as ones I memorized as a child. There is so much information in the parents manual that it is definitely worth reading. The most important thing in the manual of course if the guide to how to teach the program.

7 MP3 Downloads - (Downloaded from the website)

    • Nurturing Competent Communicators
    • Mastering Learning, Ability Development, and Individualized Education
    • Ten Thousand Times and Then Begins Understanding
    • On Listening
    • On Speaking
    • On Reading
    • On Writing
We also received a printed copy of the student manual, however the program normally comes with a downloadable copy this can be purchased from the website. This doesn't need to be printed all out at once as it is separated into the levels, so you can print out the poems for the child as you go through the levels.

One thing I love about IEW is how they let you print the student manual as needed for use within your immediate family or classroom - isn't that awesome!

Captain loved this program. He was sold with the very first poem. I mean really what boy wouldn't like to learn this;

Ooey Gooey
Author Unknown

                                           Ooey Gooey was a worm,
                                           A mighty worm was he.
                                          He stepped upon the railroad tracks,
                                          The train he did not see!
                                          Ooooey Goooey!

He also loved the second poem.

Celery
By Ogden Nash

                                            Celery, raw,
                                            Develops the jaw,
                                            But celery, stewed,
                                            Is more quietly chewed.

Captain enjoyed it so much that we recorded his first memorization live on Facebook. However, I can't find how to post it - which is very frustrating. I need to get my head around Facebook live!

If you haven't ever watched Mr Andrew Pudewa in action, you will love the bonus DVD that comes with this pack. I have seen a lot of his videos because we have his writing programs too. They are great and very inspiring.

Shortly after learning the poem about 'Ooey Gooey' we went fishing. Needless to say Captain decided it would be better to use hot dogs as bait instead of worms.

At the back of the teacher manual there are lesson enhancements. We didn't use all of them but have picked through them using the ones I thought Captain would enjoy doing the most. There are literature suggestions throughout that link the poems with well know books. Captain really enjoyed these. A lot of the poems in the student book have pictures on them. Captain didn't want to color them but I am sure a lot of kids would like too.

ARTistic Pursuits Inc.Sculpture Technique - {TOS REVIEW}

ARTistic Pursuits Inc. Review
We have had the opportunity to review quite a few books produced by ARTistic Pursuits, Inc so when we were offered one of their books again. We jumped to try their new Sculpture Technique MODEL. I actually worked through the assignments with Captain and we had a blast. The book is actually written for children 11-18 so it was very important that I stress, we worked on these assignments together. Captain would not have been able to follow the book alone. Boo is excited to work from the book next, which is one of the great things about these books - they are non-consumable. You can use them for more than one child (or even yourself).
Captain loves clay and we have used it many times at home. He was really excited that I gave him permission to use clay as part of our homeschool schedule. Normally it's considered 'play time' or 'art time' which sometimes doesn't happen as often as he thinks it should. So to hold me to use this book regularly was a huge treat for him.
ARTistic Pursuits Inc. Review

We haven't completed all of the designs but we have done quite a few of the projects. Captain loves using clay and this was a huge learning experience for him. We used quite a few different mediums and learned a lot. We had great fun!

ARTistic Pursuits is a great art program designed for homeschool families. The different techniques are taught using pictures and examples and really help you work through the procedures suggested with enough help to produce excellent finished pieces of work.

The book is split into three sections.

Unit 1 - Creating Mass with Putty
Unit 2 - Creating Scale with Clay
Unit 3 - Creating Surface with Fiber

We completed projects in unit one and two. The first project we completed was using a putty substance called 'Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty' . This putty is very weird and is unlike clay as it's very sticky and seems to dry very quickly. I mixed it up so I know I had the consistency right. We attempted a few designs that were flat and had some success with them. However, others didn't turn out quite the way we thought they were going to. The instructions said that the designs were expected to smooth out a little as they dried, but a lot of ours seemed to dry bitty. It was an interesting compound to work with and one I would have never associated with modeling.

The second medium we chose was clay. This medium was a lot more familiar to us. Captain has a big pot of clay and so he was very excited when we I told him we were going to work with that, I don't think the putty was his favorite.

We decided to do a variation of the project in the book. Captain wanted to make a bunch of flowers.

Captain really enjoyed working on these projects with me, but because he's younger it was hard to keep him focused on one project to finish one completely. So we have a few items 'waiting' for him to paint.

I love that I was able to adapt this book to Captains level and yet in the future it would be suitable for Jam or Boo to work through. All of the supplies can be purchased with the supply lists at Dick Blick which makes it very easy for busy Mom's or you can try and hunt for bargains online and find each item needed individually.

Members of the crew were given different books to review, so if modeling is not what you are looking for right now, click on the button below to see all the other books reviewed on this crew run! Plus you can follow ARTistic Pursuits Facebook

Kwik Stix 12 pk -The Pencil Grip, Inc {TOS REVIEW}

Kwik Stix The Pencil Grip, Inc. Review

Kwik Stix The Pencil Grip, Inc. Review
My son loves to paint. However, sometimes I just can't cope with the mess that they sometimes bring. He loved using Kwik Stix 12 pk no mess art supplies from The Pencil Grip, Inc.

Kwik Stix The Pencil Grip, Inc. Review

Kwik Stix paints must have been made for me in mind. Seriously I love paints and I know they are fun for the kids but honestly sometimes by the time it takes to get them out and clean up, I don't know if it's worth the effort for the two minutes of painting, or at least that's what it feels like. I wish I had these paints when Captain, Boo, or Jam were little. They are excellent and honestly even I like getting them out. In fact I had to do a project for church and I wanted a better look than markers would have given me. Before these paints there is no way I would have attempted to paint a tree at 9:30 pm. I suddenly thought how good the picture would look in paint and boom...10 minutes later I had a tree painted (now remember I am no artist) and not only was it painted but it was dry!!! Which reminds me, I have to pop to church and take a picture to share here.

I work from home and sometimes I just can't be on 'paint' duty. So these paints have completely opened a new avenue for Captain. He can get these paints out anytime he wants to paint. He's loving the new sense of freedom, that he can paint when nothing else will do.

I also had a friend come over a couple of weeks ago. Her son is four and Captain was painting when they arrived. She was so impressed with the lack of mess and fun that both kids had. Plus he went home with a DRY painting! She was so impressed that she wrote down the name before she left.

I received the primary color 12 pk for the review but they also have a METALIX pack and NEON!!! I mean seriously I HAVE to add those to our collection. Believe me, are next on my 'school supplies' shopping list. They are solid tempera paint. The 90 second dry time is not a joke it. The paper is dry in 90 seconds - I timed it.

These paints are amazing! Bring back the joy in craft time!

Hewitt Homeschooling - Speeches {TOS REVIEW}

A few years ago I was excited to review a 1st grade curriculum by  Hewitt Homeschooling  we really enjoyed it and so was thrilled to hear...
